Consulting Tip
Consultant Web Site Mistakes
A recent poll of consultants who use web sites to support their consultancies turned up a number of consultants who reported making the following mistakes with their sites:
- Underestimating the time it takes to keep a site current. Sites rich in content draw visitors, but a promise to update your site frequently may backfire if you don't keep up with the work.
- Selecting an unreliable ISP who lets the site go down too frequently.
- Failing to shop around before committing to an ISP. Prices vary greatly. Before you shell out $50 or more a month, make sure there isn't a cheaper alternative available--particularly if you are not planning to use sophisticated server functions such as CGI scripts.
- Putting up a sloppy site without thinking it through, just to have something available on the Web. One visit will turn off visitors permanently. Don't rush to publicize your URL until there's something there worth visiting!
- Changing domain names after you've gotten indexed and linked under an old URL. Hold off publicizing your site until you've got a permanent domain name to avoid confusing or frustrating visitors.
